Sugar has been manufactured in Maryborough since 1864 and at the current site since 1895.
Today the Maryborough Mill has an operating capacity of 310 tonnes of cane per hour. The fully automated, continuous process is capable of processing up to 1 million tonnes in a season on a 24 hour/7 day schedule.
All of the sugar cane crushed by Maryborough Mill is delivered by road transport.
Maryborough produces a brand of sugar known as Queensland High Pol (QHP) - processed to specification to remove more molasses and other impurities than other raw sugar brands.
Sugar is transported by road to the bulk sugar terminal at Port Bundaberg where it is stored before being shipped to the customer.
Sugar cane fibre from the process is used as feedstock for the mill boilers which provide steam for the generating of electricity to power the mill during the crushing season. Up to 2.5MW of excess electricity is generated and is exported to the State electricity grid.
Mud from the process and ash from the boilers are combined and transported back to the cane fields.
Around 30,000 tonnes of molasses is produced from the process and sold as stockfeed. Maryborough Mill has in excess of 10,000 tonnes of molasses storage.
