MSF is the largest cane grower in the Maryborough district. In 2006, company managed farms produced a record 108,662 tonnes of sugar cane.
MSF also leases land to independent cane growers. Also in 2006, leased farms produced a record 137,001 tonnes of sugar cane.
MSF commenced restructuring its cane growing business in 2008. The restructured business will consist of four 'hubs' based on large scale agricultural practices and flow-on operational efficiencies.
MSF operates smaller cane farms in the Isis district (69 hectares) and Babinda district (320 hectares).
Cane growing in the Maryborough district is dependent on irrigation. The company's focus in recent years has been on increased use of low pressure overhead irrigation systems.
Soybeans and peanuts are planted as revenue producing rotation crops while, at the same time, improving yields of subsequent sugar cane crops.
The exotic disease, sugar cane smut, was confirmed in the Maryborough district in 2007 and in the Mulgrave district in 2008. Mitigation strategies are expected to avert any serious adverse effect from the disease.
